Cruise visitors here will discover that the market town is easily walkable although, the further inland you explore, the steeper and narrower some of the streets become. Locally made wicker furniture, lacework and tapestries all make good buys along with the ubiquitous Madeira wine. Funchal is also the base for tours to the islands botanical gardens; the fishing village of Camara de Lobos where Churchill went to paint; Camacha, the wicker centre; the levada walks, part of an ancient irrigation system; and to Reids Hotel for traditional afternoon tea, making cruises to Madeira a must see.
After an enjoyable breakfast, we arrive at La Palma, known for being the greenest island in the Canaries. Santa Cruz is a small city to port at, enjoy a potter around the port or book a complimentary Afternoon Tea on board where you can take in the views around you.
Today we cruise into the vibrant port of Tenerife. Tenerife is a true slice of paradise. Explore its foodie treasures, tranquil sunsets burning with tones of pink, orange and yellow and put your underwater camera to good use. There are countless experiences to be had, yet also peaceful and idyllic with sparkling waters and powder-soft sand.
Today we’ll arrive in Gran Canaria, the most densely populated of the Canary Islands and possibly the most naturally diverse, too. You’ll get to see a little of the island’s natural beauty as we approach, before the ship docks in the Santa Catalina cruise terminal.
Boasting terrific access to the island’s cool capital, Las Palmas, the terminal is also only 100 metres down the road from Muelle, an extremely popular local shopping complex. If you want to head into the city centre, check out Vegueta, Las Palmas’ trendy old quarter. Prefer the beach? Playa de las Canteras is also within easy reach. You’ll be able to disembark at 8 am and the ship won’t leave until 10 pm, giving you a whole day to experience charming Las Palmas.
Lanzarote is synonymous with a sometimes-alien, always-striking natural beauty. Volcanoes and lava fields define the landscape, impossibly-shaped rocks perch on improbably balanced outposts and black sand beaches compete with traditional, tropical palm-lined coast for your attention. A UNESCO Geopark, the island is a fascinating destination that enchants and enthrals all visitors to its volcanic shores.
